Strength and stability for bendy bodies - the key to getting rid of pain and fatigue

Many of us with hypermobility feel both flexible and tight at the same time, struggle to feel where their joints are in space (Hello, running into countertops!), or have muscles that are constantly working overtime to create stability. Fatigue and constant nagging aches and pains can make it hard to get into an exercise routine, even though you’ve been told that’s the solution for your bendy joints.

Common issues/diagnoses I help manage and treat:

  • Hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS)
  • Recurring joint or muscle pain
  • Joint instability, subluxation concerns or difficulty controlling end range
  • Neck, shoulder, hip, back or other orthopedic pain
  • Pelvic floor issues
  • Difficulty progressing strength training without flaring symptoms
  • Returning to lifting, running or sport with more confidence and without injury
  • Managing POTS, MCAS and other diagnoses with return to exercise (in conjunction with your MD)
  • Fatigue management
  • GI issues such as constipation, SIBO, etc.

My approach

I use a whole-body and strength-based approach, but with extra considerations that come with hypermobility. That can include an emphasis on proprioception, joint control, load and fatigue management, and special consideration of movement mechanics. Despite having bendy joints, many of us feel that our muscles are overly “tight”, and I make sure to address this symptom during sessions.

We want to build your capacity so your body can tolerate more of the things you want it to do with less pain and fatigue. As someone who has managed hypermobility for myself, I understand how it feels to be a “bendy” person in the fitness world — and you are just as capable, we just need to make adjustments for your body’s specific needs!
